This standard outlines the requirements, sampling procedures, and testing methods for rubber Hawai Chappals intended for general use. Its purpose is to assist manufacturers in ensuring product quality. Rubber Hawai Chappals are widely favored in India as lightweight footwear for everyday use.

Rubber Hawai Chappals are categorized into two types depending on the sole design.

• Type 1: Rubber Hawai Chappal with a uniform sole thickness

• Type 2: Rubber Hawai Chappal with taper sole design

Rubber Hawai Chappals of both types should be crafted from natural or synthetic rubbers, or a blend thereof. The material compound must undergo vulcanization, ensuring uniformity and freedom from sulfur bloom. The die marking should be precise and clear, while the surface must exhibit a smooth finish, devoid of blisters, cavities, collapses, or imperfections. The design, shape, color, and surface of the component sheets should be mutually agreed upon by the buyer and the manufacturer.

For all sizes, the sole of a Type 1 rubber Hawai Chappal must have a minimum uniform thickness of 15.0 mm. The minimum thicknesses of the sole for a Type 2 rubber Hawai Chappal at the toe and heel, across various size ranges, should adhere to the specifications outlined in the standard. Additionally, the bottom material and strap for both types of rubber Hawai Chappals must meet the requirements specified in the standard.

TESTS

The subsequent test must be conducted for rubber Hawai chappal.

• Relative density test

• Hardness test

• Split tear strength test

• Shrinkage test

• Braking strength test

A well-maintained laboratory is necessary for conducting the various tests outlined in the standard, following the specified methods.

According to the standard, specific information must be marked on the outer waist of the sole and the inner face of the straps of a rubber Hawai chappal.

The rubber Hawai chappal can feature the ISI certification mark, and packaging and marking must align with the prescribed standards. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted following a comprehensive evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes.
