In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Lets delve deeper into IS 17550 (Part 1) : 2021 for Household refrigerating appliance.
IS 17550 (Part 1) : 2021 addresses refrigerators, whether with or without low temperature capabilities. This standard outlines the key features of fully factory assembled household refrigerators, including those with crisper, ice-making, or frozen food storage compartments. It also delineates the test methods employed to assess these characteristics.
The tests outlined in the Indian Standard pertain to type tests specifically designed for appliances categorized under the Tropical Class (T). This standard is applicable to household refrigerating appliances classified as Tropical Class (T), suitable for operation in ambient temperatures ranging from +18°C to +43°C.
Household refrigerators should be constructed to ensure satisfactory performance and durability during usage. A set of pertinent tests is employed to assess their performance during use.
Test shall be classified in to three groups:
Type tests
Acceptance tests
Production routine tests
1.Type Test
Door seal test
Test for the mechanical strength of self and similar components
Door and fittings tests
No-load adjustment test
No-load performance test
Ice-making test
Thermal insulation test
High voltage test
Rated energy consumption test
Internal frost accumulation and defrost test
2.Acceptance Tests
3.Production routine test
Thermostat test
Insulation resistance test
Door seal test
Every refrigerator must be clearly and permanently marked in one or multiple locations with the required information as specified in the standard. Additionally, the refrigerator may bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). To use the standard mark (ISI Mark), the manufacturer is required to obtain a BIS license for refrigerators from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes during an inspection of the manufacturing premises.
The refrigerator must adhere to the quality, safety, and performance criteria outlined in this standard for the ECO Mark.
When seeking an ECO Mark, the Manufacturer must furnish BIS with the necessary consent clearance mandated by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; 1977, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, alongside the authorization stipulated by the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Additionally, for ECO Mark compliance, the refrigerator must adhere to the noise level standards outlined in the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986, as updated periodically.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
