In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Lets delve deeper into IS 9438:2018 for wheels or rims used in trucks or buses.
IS 9438 addresses the Performance Requirements and Testing Methods for Wheels or Rims for Trucks and Buses. This standard outlines laboratory test procedures and performance criteria for evaluating key strength characteristics of disc wheels intended for highway use on trucks, buses, trailers, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. Additionally, failure criteria are defined for the tests outlined in this standard.
As per IS 9438:2018, Wheels/Rims for Trucks and Buses are categorized in the following manner:
1. Based on Material of Wheel/ Rim
Ferrous
Aluminium
2. Based on Category of Wheel Rim
Disc Wheel
Wheel with demountable Rim
The highest load-rated Wheels/Rims for each Material and Wheel Rim Category will undergo testing to encompass the entire range of Wheels/Rims for that Material. Tests will exclusively employ fully processed new wheels/rims that accurately represent those intended for the vehicle, with each wheel/rim designated for a single test.
The subsequent test must be conducted for Wheels or Rim for Truck & Buses.
1. Disc wheel dynamic cornering fatigue testThe test must be conducted using one of the methods outlined in the standard.
Cornering fatigue test (90†loading method)
Cornering fatigue test (40†loading method)
Cornering fatigue test (two-axis load method)
2. Disc wheel and demountable rim endurance test under dynamic radial load.
A well-maintained laboratory is necessary for conducting various tests in accordance with the methods outlined in the standard.
Wheels and rims must be labelled with the manufacturer's name or trademark, as well as the size designation. All production that complies with the Indian Standard and is covered by the license should bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
