According to IS 3097:2006, BIS certification is compulsory for Veneered Particle Boards. These boards are engineered wood products that marry the aesthetic appeal of authentic wood veneer with the practicality and cost-effectiveness of particle board. Crafted from compressed wood particles, including wood chips, shavings, and sawdust, bound together by adhesive resins in the core, Veneered Particle Boards boast a relatively low-profile core, offering structural robustness and stability.
They serve as a more budget-friendly alternative to solid wood, making them highly sought-after for various projects like furniture, cabinets, and interior design. Compared to solid wood, they exhibit lower susceptibility to cracking, warping, and splitting, ensuring greater dimensional stability. For manufacturers in the furniture and woodworking industries, following the Veneered Particle Boards standard IS 3097:2006 is crucial. Adhering to this standard guarantees that veneered particle boards meet precise technical and quality standards. IS 3097:2006-compliant boards offer improved safety for end users by preserving structural integrity under load. Additionally, the standard establishes dimensions and tolerances for veneered particle boards, ensuring consistency that enables interchangeability among boards from various manufacturers, simplifying repair and replacement processes.

Manufacturers are required to acquire mandatory ISI Mark certification before introducing veneered particle boards to the Indian market. ISI certification is essential to ensure that these boards adhere to rigorous quality, safety, and technical standards. This certification enhances the overall performance and reliability of structures and objects utilizing veneered particle boards. It offers assurance to building construction professionals, interior designers, and furniture craftsmen that the veneered particle boards utilized in their projects are of top quality, ensuring longevity, structural integrity, and aesthetic appeal.

Acquiring a BIS license requires a detailed evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control capabilities, testing facilities, and production processes. This comprehensive assessment ensures that the products meet regulatory requirements and are safe and dependable for consumers.

IS 3097:2006 specifies requirements for particle boards that are overlaid with natural wood veneer on one or both surfaces. The standard outlines criteria related to core board quality, veneer thickness, adhesive bonding strength, dimensional tolerances, moisture resistance, surface finish, and mechanical performance. It also prescribes test methods to evaluate durability, bonding integrity, and structural stability.
Veneered particle boards certified under IS 3097:2006 are generally used in furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, wall paneling, partitions, and decorative interior applications. These boards combine the structural benefits of particle board with the aesthetic appeal of natural wood veneer, making them suitable for residential and commercial interiors.
All domestic manufacturers producing veneered particle boards for sale in India must obtain BIS certification. Foreign manufacturers exporting such products to India must apply under the relevant BIS certification scheme before entering the Indian market. Traders or distributors cannot independently apply unless they are the actual manufacturer.
The certification process involves submitting an online application to BIS along with necessary documents such as factory details, manufacturing process information, quality control procedures, and testing facilities data. Samples are tested in BIS-recognized laboratories according to IS 3097:2006 parameters. BIS officials also conduct a factory inspection to assess production capability and quality assurance systems. After successful evaluation, a license to use the ISI Mark is granted.
Testing includes evaluation of board density, moisture content, glue shear strength, internal bond strength, bending strength, veneer adhesion quality, thickness tolerance, and resistance to delamination. These tests ensure that the veneered particle boards maintain structural integrity and aesthetic quality during usage.
