Key update on the Indian Standard for all current licence holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and sellers under the Primary Batteries (Quality Control) Order, 2025.

OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has blazoned a draft announcement called the Primary Batteries( Quality Control) Order, 2025. This regulation applies to products distributed as primary batteries, which must misbehave with the specifications stated in Indian Standard IS 6303( Part 5) 2023, Primary Batteries – Part 5 Safety of Batteries with Waterless Electrolyte. Every similar product must carry the Standard Mark and secure a BIS license, as per Scheme – I of Schedule – II in the Bureau of Indian norms( Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Compliance deadlines:

General manufacturers (excluding micro and small enterprises): within 6 months of publication.
Small enterprises: within 9 months from publication.
Micro enterprises: within 12 months from publication.

This order does n't cover products manufactured within India solely for import. The BIS will act as the certifying and enforcement body for particulars falling under this regulation. Any breach of its vittles will attract penalties as per the Bureau of Indian norms Act, 2016.
