The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has released a draft notification for the Chains and Sprockets (Quality Control) Order, 2025. The order will take effect from the date it is officially published in the Gazette.
It applies to chains and sprockets that must meet the specifications of Indian Standard IS 11740:2014 — Motorcycle chains.
All such products must carry the BIS Standard Mark, issued under a valid licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in line with Scheme–I of Schedule–II under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

 

Implementation timeline:

• General manufacturers (excluding Micro and Small Enterprises): Must comply within 6 months from the date of publication.

• Small Enterprises: Required to comply within 9 months.

• Micro Enterprises: Compliance must be ensured within 12 months.

Goods manufactured exclusively for export are exempt. BIS will serve as the certifying and enforcement authority, and violations will be punishable under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
