The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has released a draft notification called the “Chains and Sprockets (Quality Control) Order, 2025.” This Order will take effect from the day it is published in the Official Gazette.
It applies to all products identified as chains and sprockets, which must meet the requirements set in Indian Standard IS 2637:2004 — “Steel roller chains types S and C attachments and sprockets.” Every such product must carry the Standard Mark and be licensed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in line with Scheme–I, Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

 

Implementation timeline:

• General manufacturers (excluding Micro and Small Enterprises): Must comply within 6 months from the date of publication.

• Small Enterprises: Required to comply within 9 months.

• Micro Enterprises: Compliance must be ensured within 12 months.

The Order will not apply to products manufactured in India solely for export.

The BIS will serve as the certifying and enforcement body for these standards. Any breach of the provisions will attract penalties as per the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
