Dear Reader,
Key notice on Indian Standard compliance for current licensees, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and sellers under Sewing Machines (Quality Control) Order, 2021.
On 15th March 2021, the Central Government issued the Sewing Machines (Quality Control) Order, 2021 under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This order was introduced in public interest to ensure quality, safety, and standardization of sewing machines manufactured, imported, or sold in India.
The Order came into force on 1st September 2021 and mandates that specified sewing machines must conform to the relevant Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Certification must be obtained under Scheme-I of the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018.
As per the notification, Household Zig-Zag Sewing Machine Head must comply with IS 15449 (Part 1): 2004, which lays down general requirements related to performance, safety, and construction. The latest amendments and updated versions of the standard, as notified by BIS from time to time, are also applicable.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has been designated as the certifying and enforcement authority for this Order. However, the regulation does not apply to sewing machines manufactured exclusively for export purposes.
This Quality Control Order strengthens regulatory oversight, ensures consumer protection, and promotes the sale of standardized and safe sewing machines in the Indian market.
