BIS UPDATES ON AMENDMENT FOR BICYCLES- RETRO-REFLECTIVE DEVICES

Key update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for “Bicycles-Retro Reflective Devices” for the Indian market.

BIS Notification for Bicycles- Retro Reflective Devices

OVERVIEW

The "Bicycles - Retro Reflective Devices (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2021" was published in a gazette notification on December 24, 2021. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, established regulations for Bicycles and Retro Reflective Devices in accordance with IS/ISO 6742-2:2015 and clause 4.14 of IS 10613:2014, effective July 7, 2020.

In the interest of public safety, the Central Government, after consulting with BIS, deemed it necessary to implement these regulations under the authority of sections 16 and 17 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).

Retro-reflective devices must comply with the specified standards and carry the BIS standard mark. They cannot be produced, traded, sold, stocked, or imported without the ISI Mark and a Certificate of Conformity issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

The implementation date of this order has been extended from January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2023. This regulation does not apply to products intended for export.

Retro reflectors enhance visibility, significantly improving cyclist safety.

Note: Any individual or entity that violates the provisions of this order will face penalties as outlined in the BIS Act, 2016.
