OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced the "Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023," a new regulation aimed at ensuring quality control in cast iron products.

Effective six months from its publication in the Official Gazette, the order mandates that all cast iron products must comply with Indian Standard 13349:1992 (Cast Iron Single-Faced Thimble Mounted Sluice Gates) and bear the Standard Mark, issued through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

It’s important to note that the order does not apply to cast iron products made domestically or those intended for export. Additionally, small enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), will be required to comply with the order nine months from its publication. For micro-enterprises, compliance is required twelve months after publication.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been appointed as the certifying and enforcing authority for Cast Iron Products under the new quality control directive.

Any breach of this order will result in penalties in accordance with the provisions specified in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
