Dear Reader,
Key update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for "Bicycle & Bicycle Parts" for the Indian market.
In response to the Hon'ble Prime Minister's call for "Zero Defect, Zero Effect" manufacturing, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is developing Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and Technical Regulations for various products.
The draft QCO for bicycles and bicycle parts has been prepared and is attached below for review.
DPIIT invites all industries, apex industry associations (such as CII, FICCI, and ASSOCHAM), sectoral and regional industry associations, as well as relevant administrative ministries and concerned R&D institutions to submit their comments on the draft QCOs by January 15, 2023. Your feedback is crucial in shaping these regulations to ensure quality and safety in the industry.
According to the Draft Quality Control Order (QCO), the Central Government, after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), deems it necessary to issue the “Bicycle & Bicycle Parts (Quality Control) Order, 2023” under the authority of Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).
Under this order, all bicycles and bicycle parts must comply with the relevant Indian Standards and display the ISI Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, in compliance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018. Production, trade, sale, stocking, or importation of these items without the ISI Mark is prohibited.
This order does not apply to products intended for export.
Note: Any individual or entity that violates the provisions of this order will face penalties as outlined in the BIS Act, 2016.
