OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a new directive titled the "Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023," which mandates strict adherence to quality standards for cast iron products.

This order, effective six months from its publication in the Official Gazette, requires all cast iron products to meet the Indian Standard 1537:1976 (covering vertically cast-iron pressure pipes for water, gas, and sewage) and carry the Standard Mark. This mark can be obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

It is important to note that this quality control order does not apply to domestically produced goods or items intended for export. Additionally, small enterprises, as defined in sections (h) and (m) of section 2 of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), will have an extended deadline of nine months from the date of publication for compliance.

For micro-enterprises, the order will become applicable twelve months after the publication date.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been appointed as the certifying and enforcing authority for Cast Iron Products under the new quality control directive.

Any breach of this order will result in penalties in accordance with the provisions specified in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
