Key update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for the Furniture (Storage units) (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, which will take effect 12 months after its publication.

As per this order, all furniture goods or articles must comply with Indian Standard IS 17634:2022 for Storage Units and carry the Standard Mark. To achieve this, manufacturers must obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in accordance with Scheme I of Schedule II under the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Exemptions include:

Export Furniture: This order does not apply to goods or articles produced domestically for export.
Micro and Small Enterprises: Micro and small enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are exempt for 18 months from the publication date.
Udyam Portal Enterprises: Goods or articles manufactured by enterprises registered on the Udyam Portal of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, with investments in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding ₹25 lakh and a turnover not exceeding ₹2 crore, certified by a Chartered Accountant, are also exempt from this order.

This order aims to ensure that tables and desks meet quality standards while offering exemptions for smaller enterprises and export-oriented production.
