Dear Reader,
Key update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for the amendment of Cotton Bales.
The Ministry of Textiles has mandated that Cotton Bales comply with the Indian Standard IS 12171:2019. To ensure quality, these bales must feature the Standard Mark, which requires a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards under Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
The "Cotton Bales (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2023" will take effect from August 27, 2025.
This Order applies to Cotton Bales for domestic use but excludes those meant for export, as long as they meet the specifications of the foreign buyer.

Adhering to these rules is crucial, as non-compliance can result in penalties under the BIS Act, 2016. This ensures that all cotton bales meet the required standards and maintain quality.
