The Indian government has introduced the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2023, which will come into effect twelve months after its announcement. This order mandates that all furniture must comply with specified quality standards and bear a special mark, as detailed in the Table's columns.

Standards and Licensing: All furniture items, including storage units, must adhere to the quality standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and obtain a BIS license under Scheme I of Schedule II, as outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

There are some Exceptions:

1. Micro and Small Enterprises: Furniture produced in India for export does not need to comply with these standards.

2. Export-Only Furniture: Enterprises categorized as micro or small under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are exempt for 18 months from the notification date.

3. Udyam Portal Registered Enterprises: Goods or articles manufactured by enterprises registered under the "Udyam Portal" and meeting specific financial criteria, as certified by a Chartered Accountant, are also exempt from this regulation.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is responsible for enforcing these regulations, and non-compliance may result in legal consequences. The latest quality standards, as established by the government, must be followed to ensure adherence.

Authorized by section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and in consultation with the BIS, the Central Government has introduced this order to enhance quality control for furniture, effective twelve months from the publication date.
