The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, which will come into effect 12 months from its publication date. This order mandates that all furniture goods and articles, specifically beds, must comply with Indian Standard IS 17635:2022 and bear the Standard Mark. Manufacturers must obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in accordance with Scheme I of Schedule II, as outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Exemptions include:

1. Export Goods Exemption: The order does not apply to furniture products manufactured domestically for export purposes.

2. Exemption for Micro and Small Enterprises: As per the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, micro and small enterprises are granted an exemption from the order for 18 months from the notification date.

3. Udyam Portal Enterprises Exemption: Enterprises registered under the Udyam Portal of the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, with investments in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding ₹25 lakh and a turnover of ₹2 crore, certified by a Chartered Accountant, are also exempt from compliance.

This Furniture Quality Control Order 2025 aims to enforce quality standards for beds while offering exemptions to small enterprises and export-focused manufacturers, ensuring flexibility in compliance.
